Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

The Master of Education (TESOL) has been designed for educational professionals seeking to develop their expertise and understanding in the areas of applied linguistics and language education, particularly in the teaching of English.

Students are encouraged to explore a range of issues relating to language teaching and learning, applied linguistics and sociocultural contexts of education. As well, the program develops themes and examines theories and research relating to the practical issues of language teaching and learning in a second-language environment.

All of the teaching staff are TESOL specialists, who have academic and professional qualifications in TESOL along with many years of professional experience.

Outcomes

At the conclusion of this designated program students should be able to:

  • be familiar with current theoretical and pedagogical debates in the area of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).
  • understand theoretical and methodological issues and principles underlying the learning, teaching and assessment of English for speakers of other languages in diverse contexts.
  • understand pedagogical principles relevant to language learning, teaching and assessment of English for speakers of other languages.
  • develop knowledge of research that has been undertaken in the fields of TESOL and TESOL-related disciplines.
  • develop knowledge about language as it relates to the teaching English to speakers of other languages.
  • develop a range of skills necessary for effective research-led pedagogical practice in the area of TESOL.
  • select, devise and use teaching and assessment materials appropriate and sensitive to individual learners’ needs and language teaching contexts.
  • provide leadership in developing TESOL programs for teaching, learning and assessment purposes in second and foreign language contexts.
Awards and requirements

Master of Education (TESOL)
To qualify for the award of Master of Education (TESOL) candidates must complete 8 units of study (48 credit points), including:

  • a minimum of 5 units of study (30 credit points) from this specialisation, comprising;
    - a minimum of 4 units of study (24 credit points) of core units; and
    - a minimum of 1 unit of study (6 credit points) of elective units from the table below; plus
  • a minimum of 1 unit of study (6 credit points) of capstone units; and
  • a maximum of 2 units of study (12 credit points) of postgraduate Education units which can be chosen from any designation within the Master of Education program.


Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (TESOL)
To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (TESOL) candidates must complete 6 units of study (36 credit points), including:

  • a minimum of 4 units of study (24 credit points) of core units; and
  • a minimum of 1 unit of study (6 credit points) of elective units from the table below; plus
  • a maximum of 1 unit of study (6 credit points) of postgraduate Education units which can be chosen from any designation within the Master of Education program.


Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (TESOL)
To qualify for the award of Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (TESOL) candidates must complete 4 units of study (24 credit points), including:

  • a minimum of 2 units of study (12 credit points) of core units; and
  • a maximum 2 units of study (12 credit points) of elective units from the table below.
