University principal partner for TEDxSydney with a food twist

The University of Sydney is the principal partner of TEDxSydney 2013, the annual event of 'Ideas worth spreading' which this year includes an innovative focus on food and sustainability.
TEDxSydney is an offshoot of US-based TED talks, founded in 1984, which presents the world's leading thinkers and doers sharing their most important ideas in an 18 minute talk.
Previous TED speakers have included Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Frank Gehry, Sir Richard Branson, Bono, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
Dr Michael Spence, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sydney said:

In 2012 the University was the exclusive education partner for the event at Carriageworks in Sydney and enhanced the event with dynamic displays on soil security and healthy eating.

The undiscovered youth hold many answers, and the university's research teams are continuing to push the boundaries," said licensee and longtime Tedster Remo Giuffré.
This year's TEDxSydney, on 4 May at Sydney Opera House, is placing a special emphasis on locally grown, sustainable food with a 'crowd-sourced' lunchtime feast for everyone attending the event.
Calling the innovation 'Crowd Farming,' TEDxSydney is collaborating with sustainable food group, Grow It Local, to inspire members of the TEDxSydney community, local growers, gardeners and farmers to create a meal for all 2200 attendees.
Contributions will range from cows, cheese and beer to vegetables, jam and eggs. Biodegradable waste from the feast will be processed on the spot, resulting in compost available to guests and growers at the end of the event.
"This year's focus on sustainable farming mirrors the work of our key interdisciplinary teams in the Charles Perkins Centre and the Centre for Carbon, Water and Food where some of our finest researchers are tackling global issues and seeking answers to some of the world's most pressing environmental and health problems," said Dr Spence.
"The University's multidisciplinary approach fits perfectly with the TED ethos of bringing together a diversity of original insights to provide new perspectives and solutions."
Speakers and performers for this year's event will be unveiled next month, with applications to attend open from 18 February to 31 March on the TEDxSydney website.
TED is a nonprofit organisation which started as a four-day conference in California in 1984. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring (along with a parallel conference, TEDActive). TEDGlobal is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organised events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organised TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised.
TEDxSydney is an independently organised event licensed from TED by Remo Giuffré (REMO General Store) and organised by a network of fellow thinkers and long time collaborators.
