'First' MBA scholarship winner announced after national search

Anita Mitchell, a Sydney based specialist in environmental sustainability, has been selected by Financial Review BOSS and the University of Sydney Business School as the recipient of a 'First' MBA scholarship, from a pool of Australia's brightest young business talent.
The 'First' scholarship will allow Anita to join the University of Sydney Business School's new Master of Business Administration (MBA) program when it begins in 2013, and take part in the BOSS Emerging Leaders Program.
"The University of Sydney and Fairfax Media's Financial Review Group have sponsored the 'First' scholarship because we believe that the next generation of creative business leaders must be equipped with cutting edge knowledge, the practical ability to apply that knowledge and the personal skills to motivate and influence others," said Business School Dean, Professor Geoffrey Garrett.
Anita completed her Bachelor of Science (Environmental Biology) at the University of Technology, Sydney, before undertaking a Master of Environmental Management at Macquarie University. She is now working on the massive Barangaroo development in Sydney's Darling Harbour as General Manager, Sustainability, for Lend Lease.
The gruelling search for Anita began when the Financial Review called on Australia's emerging business leaders to complete a self-assessment based on a tool developed by the global leadership and talent consulting firm, Korn/Ferry International, which is partnering with the Business School in the delivery of the new MBA program.
The top 100 entries were asked to submit an opinion article based on a comprehensive leadership research study conducted by Financial Review Business Research. 70 applicants were invited to attend an assessment master class where the top 11 were selected.
Anita was announced as the 'First' scholarship winner today at a private lunch.
"Anita was chosen from applicants of the highest calibre," said the Business School's MBA Director, Professor Nick Wailes. "She and others like her, will now join a program which will provide them with an opportunity to accelerate down their chosen career path through industry-oriented courses coupled with practical business experience."
The 'First' scholarship initiative bringing Financial Review BOSS and the University of Sydney Business School together, was designed to highlight the need for a shift in leadership focus and to reward Australia's top emerging leaders.
"The leaders of tomorrow will have to manage in an increasingly complex, global technology driven competitive environment. This will require a broad skill set that is heavy on an ability to motivate and bring people along. It is the era of the leader more as coach than as commander.
This will require an ability to deliver performance through collaboration, a capacity to harness the best of all their team's talents and an ability to deal with a complex and rapidly changing environment." said Narelle Hooper, Editor, BOSS.
The 'First' scholarship is also part of The Emerging Leaders Program whereby Financial Review BOSS and the University of Sydney Business School mentor tomorrow's leaders. The program provides members with access to top business thought leaders through a series of events and educational master classes.
