The workplace relations debate comes to the University of Sydney tomorrow night when Julia Gillard delivers the annual industrial relations lecture, the Kingsley Laffer Memorial Lecture.

"The way work is organised, the clash between workers' rights and business goals, and the balance between work and home are some of the biggest social policy issues our community faces," said Dr Marian Baird, an Associate Professor in the University of Sydney's Discipline of Work and Organisational Studies.

"At the start of the 21st Century Australia is at a crossroads - the decisions we make today will profoundly shape the look and direction of our workplaces, our communities, and our family lives tomorrow."

"As the Shadow Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, The Deputy Opposition Leader, and as an employment lawyer, Julia Gillard's views on these subjects are of immense interest to all of us," A/Professor Baird said.

"This year's lecture continues our tradition of holding events that bring discussion of crucial contemporary policy issues to students and staff at the University, the industrial relations community and members of the public."

Julia Gillard joins a distinguished list of past Laffer lecturers, including Bob Hawke, Kim Beazley, Justice Deirdre O'Connor, Jennie George, Quentin Bryce, Sharan Burrow, Justice Michael Kirby, Professor Russell Lansbury and Professor Ron McCallum.

This lecture celebrates the work of Kingsley Laffer, the founding father of industrial relations at the University of Sydney and a pioneer of teaching and research in Australian industrial relations.

At the time of his retirement from the University of Sydney in 1976, Kingsley Laffer was Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Industrial Relations within the Faculty of Economics.

"We are delighted to welcome Julia to the University of Sydney this week as the 15th Laffer lecturer," A/Professor Baird said.
