David Stratton to receive honorary doctorate

7 June 2006

David Stratton, one of Australia's most celebrated film critics, will be conferred with an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from The University of Sydney on Friday 9 June.

Well known for his role as the co-host of the ABC TV program At the Movies and film critic for The Australian, David Stratton has also had a 16-year association with The University of Sydney's Continuing Education program.

The honorary degree is in recognition not only of David Stratton's illustrious career, but his very special contribution to intellectual life at the university. His History of World Cinema series at the Centre for Continuing Education is now in its eighth year (part of an epic ten year plan).

"His passion for the subject is contagious," says Michèle Asprey, a lawyer and avid film student who has been studying the history of cinema at the University under David Stratton since 1991.

"He moves heaven and earth to locate rare and unusual films that would be almost impossible to see otherwise. I think David's most recent course, the mighty 10-year History of World Cinema, is one of the most significant contributions ever made to film culture in Australia."

Throughout the series David Stratton shares his encyclopaedic knowledge about film with hundreds of grateful students each year. He introduces students to three years of cinema history in each 12-week course; the latest course will cover the years 1967 to 1969.

He will be taking students on a cinematic world tour, from Francis Ford Coppola and others directors who emerged against a backdrop of Vietnam, to the bold Australian films that clashed with conservative censors, to the rich tradition of European cinema that continued despite the invasion of Czechoslovakia.
