The science of healthy ageing

What can really be done to promote longevity? Modern science can tell us an increasing amount about the ageing process, as a first step in combating many age-related conditions. It also opens the door to keeping ageing at bay.
On 19 September for the latest talk in the series 21st Century Medicine - today's research, tomorrow's healthcare, Professor David Le Couteur from Sydney Medical School joins Professor Stephen Simpson, director of the Charles Perkins Centre to discuss the relationship between nutrition, exercise, hormones and ageing, looking at the latest scientific developments.
David Le Couteur is Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University, Senior Staff Specialist in Geriatric Medicine in the Central Sydney Area Health Service and Director of the Centre for Education and Research on Ageing. His research interests include the biology of ageing, the ageing liver, geriatric pharmacology, falls and Parkinson's disease. He is Director of the Ageing and Alzheimers Research Foundation.
Professor Stephen Simpson worked with colleague David Raubenheimer, to develop an integrative modelling framework for nutrition which was devised and tested using insects but has since been applied to a wide range of organisms, from slime moulds to humans, and problems, from aquaculture and conservation biology to the dietary causes of human obesity and ageing.
In 2007 he was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, in 2008 he was awarded the Eureka Prize for Scientific Research, in 2009 he was named NSW Scientist of the Year, and in 2010 he was named as the Wigglesworth Medallist by the Royal Entomological Society of London.
