Six University of Sydney students will appear on two of the biggest national sporting stages this weekend in the NRL and AFL grand finals.

Master of Commerce student Corey Payne is in the Canterbury Bulldogs squad for their National Rugby League grand final against Melbourne Storm on Sunday.

Corey, who already has a bachelor's degree from the University, received the 2011 Young Alumni Achievement award, and in August was named in the National Rugby League-Rugby League Players Association (NRL-RLPA) Academic Team of the Year for the second time.

He's also established the Future Directions Network, which encourages students from South-West Sydney to pursue higher education by offering them mentoring, career advice and support to find and apply for scholarships.

In another Sydney-Melbourne clash, five University of Sydney Business School students will line up for the Sydney Swans in Saturday's Aussie Rules grand final against Hawthorn.

Graduate Certificate in Commerce students Lewis Roberts-Thompson, Josh Kennedy, Mitch Moreton and Kieran Jack will lace up their boots alongside Master of Commerce student Mike Pyke.

While there is fierce rivalry between the two football codes for the affections of the nation, the University of Sydney has facilitated at least some cross-code cooperation: the Swans' Pyke, who previously represented Canada at rugby union, and Bulldog Payne completed a group assignment together as part of their studies. The two have spoken this week and wished each other the best of luck in their respective contests.
