Honorary degrees for high achievers

Chief Justice Jim Spigelman, UNESCO cultural heritage director Lyndel Prott and Reserve Bank Governor Ian Macfarlane are the most recent recipients of honorary degrees from the University.
Mr Spigelman and Ms Prott, both Sydney graduates, were awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws, while Mr Macfarlane, a Monash economics graduate, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science in Economics.

Mr Spigelman, who graduated from law with first class honours and the University Medal in 1971, was appointed NSW Chief Justice in 1998.
Ms Prott joined UNESCO in 1990 after working in cultural heritage law at the University. She has been influential in introducing laws to protect and return cultural property following armed conflict and in the International Court of Justice.

Mr Macfarlane was born in Sydney but grew up in Melbourne. He studied at Oxford University and worked with the OECD in Paris before joining the research department of the Reserve Bank in 1979. Influential in monetary policy, he was appointed Reserve Bank Governor in 1996.
