Day 10 Olympic review: Whalan and McGregor make water polo quarters
7 August 2012
Andrew Tilley from Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) reports on the latest action at the London 2012 Olympics.
The University of Sydney's Thomas Whalan and Sam McGregor have helped Australia qualify for the quarter-finals of the men's Olympic water polo event for the first time since Sydney in 2000.
Needing a win against Greece to keep their Olympic campaign alive, the Sharks were impressive in their 13-8 defeat of Greece as they improved their shooting performance from previous matches, with their goals coming from 23 shots. The two teams went goal-for-goal in the first quarter, but it ended with Australia leading 3-2 before steadily pulling clear.
The Sharks next play Serbia in a quarter-final on Wednesday.
A nil-all draw against Argentina has cost Australia's women hockey players a semi-final spot.
The Hockeyroos' best chance came after just three minutes, when University of Sydney graduate and SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder Megan Rivers forced a good save from Argentine keeper Florencia Mutio.
From then on, Argentina, who needed only a draw to qualify as the top team in Pool B, were content to play a counter-attacking style and the Hockeyroos couldn't find a way through.
The draw leaves Australia third in Pool B behind Argentina and New Zealand. The Hockeyroos needed a win to progress to the semi-finals; they now play a fifth-versus-sixth classification match on Friday to end their Olympic campaign.
University of Sydney graduate and SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder Murray Stewart competed in the first of his three kayak events at the London games on Monday.
After making it through to the semi-final, and surging to the front of the race at the halfway point, Stewart was eliminated from the men's K1 1000m.
Stewart has another two events to come: K4 1000m and K1 200m.
