Col James Awarded for Community Building
1 September 2006
This weekend Col James, a University of Sydney architecture lecturer, will be presented with a University of Sydney Alumni Award for his work with disadvantaged and Aboriginal groups and their housing needs.
Mr James has been dedicated to the creation and improvement of housing for the poor, homeless, disadvantaged and Aboriginal groups for over 30 years. He has pioneered the development of new forms of housing for the poor, providing innovative solutions that have taken account of individual and community needs.
At the request of South Sydney Council, Mr James engaged with student squatters in Sydney, and his work led to the development of a caretaker leasing scheme and the launch of the homeless assistance group CRASH - Construction Industry Relief and Assistance for the Single Homeless.
Mr James has also provided pro-bono architectural services to a number of Aboriginal service groups and contributed widely to housing and sustainability debates.
Dedicated to creating and improving Aboriginal housing and services, he has been a driving force in building links between the University, the Aboriginal Housing Company and the local Darlington community, both as a local resident and also as Director of the IB Fell Housing Research Centre of the Faculty of Architecture.
Following completion of Master's Degree in Architecture at Harvard, Col James received a Diploma in Town and Country Planning from the University of Sydney in 1970. He then joined the University as a Senior Lecturer, a position he still holds.
In 1994 Mr James was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for services to architecture and to the community. The 2006 Alumni Award for Community Service is conferred on him in recognition of his outstanding community services.
The award will be presented by Vice-Chancellor Gavin Brown at a ceremony on Saturday 2 September. Special guest speaker will be acclaimed film director and University of Sydney graduate, Mr Bruce Beresford.
