Congratulations to Lucila Carvalho for Winning Best Student Paper

Lucila Carvalho, a PhD student in Design Computing and Cognition, has won the Best Student Paper Prize for her paper "Knowledge and identity in the design field" at ConnectED 2007, the International Conference on Design Education.
In her research, Lucila is investigating knowledge and identity in designeducation by examining perceptions of achievement and membership within four design disciplines: engineering, architecture, digital media and fashiondesign. Drawing on concepts derived from sociology of education developed by Basil Berstein and Karl Maton, Lucila is working on theorizing how designers and those new to the field recognize and realize design practices, how "knowledge" and "knowers" are specialized, and its relation to the shaping of identity within these disciplines. This research is informing the development of a mobile e-learning environment for Sydney's Powerhouse Museum for children to experience designing in an informal learning context.
