Faculty hosts third annual Park Light competition
3 September 2012
On Thursday 30 August, the Faculty hosted the third Park Light lighting design competition at Gadigal Green, behind Maze Crescent.
Teams of lighting professionals and lighting design students from the Faculty and other lighting schools were assigned areas in the park with the instruction to design and implement lighting according to the theme "Winter Wonderland".
The competition, an initiative of the NSW Illumination Engineers (IES) Society, was keen to partner with the University following the Faculty's involvement in the Vivid lighting festival earlier this year. Hosting Park Light at the University meant the IES collaborated with global illumination leader and Faculty illumination programs director Wendy Davis.
Davis said that the event was a great opportunity for students to apply some of their technical knowledge in a fun setting.
"It was a lot of fun. It was great to have so many people from the local lighting industry come to the University to interact with the students and indulge their creativity," Davis said. "It was also a great opportunity for students to network with their industry peers."
Judging was a very democratic affair, as all attendees were able to cast their vote for their favourite lighting design. The winners were rewarded with scarves (matching the winter theme) and pizza was served to warm away the winter chill.
Entry in the competition was free and local manufacturers and distributors loaned the lighting products.
The Faculty was glad of the opportunity to host students, industry and the Illumination Engineers Society for this creative, collaborative event.
