Sydney Civil Engineering Students Excel in Engineering Week Bridge Contest

14 August 2006

As part on National Engineeering Week, the Assoication of Consulting Engineers Australia (ACEA) organised the annual student Bridge Building Competition in Martin Place, Sydney.

There were around 30-35 teams from various universities in NSW that competed, and there were some very interesting and elaborate designs. The aim was to build the lightest bridge to hold the desired 3.75kg load midspan over a 2.4m span.

A team of 2nd year students from Sydney Uni Civil Engineering, James Alcorn, Joel Berger and Chris Wild, weighed in at around 2.3kg, the 6th heaviest. Nonetheless their bridge successfully held the load then failed after 5kg when it flexed/bent downward and touched the ground (a depth of 150mm). They had the winning entry and picked up $2000 first prize.

Well done to all participants.
