15 August 2006

A freak hailstorm on Tuesday 15 August covered The University of Sydney and nearby areas in a blanket of white, making it look like it had been snowing!

Neale Fraser, a senior forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology, said it was not classified a severe thunderstorm but some of the hail had been as big as two centimetres in diameter.

"The temperature dropped from 17 degrees at 4pm to 12.3 degrees at 4.21 pm," Mr Fraser said. At 1.30 pm the temperature in the city had peaked at 20.5 degrees.
