Experienced engineering practicioners strengthen our teaching team

28 July 2008

The appropriate mix of theoretical background and practical experience is the main aim of our undergraduate teaching programme.

The School is pleased to announce the inclusion of three current practicioners as part of the teaching team this year.

Rob Herbertson
Rob Herbertson

Robert Herbertson will be our Consultant for Design Studies for our final year students. Robert is an alumnus of civil engineering.

Robert has over thirty eight years consulting structural engineering experience, gained in Australia, the United Kingdom and Germany. He graduated from the University of Sydney in Science and Civil Engineering (with First Class Honours), and later completed an MPhil and DIC at Imperial College, London University.

Robert has worked on structure for a broad range of principally architect designed buildings, developing particular expertise in recent years in health, (medium density) residential and adaptive re-use projects. While at Imperial College, he coordinated the requirements of the geotechnical and structural departments, to design and supervise the fabrication of a large scale soil-structure interaction testing facility, and participated in box girder bridge plate buckling research.

On his return to Australia, Robert was Principal Engineer Structures for Maunsell. In 1988, Robert started his own consulting engineering practice, The Structural Design Group Pty Ltd. Over the years SDG, as the firm became known, achieved a wide reputation for practical structural engineering design solutions, deliverable within time and cost budgets. It was the structural engineer for significant award winning projects including the Archery Centre at Homebush Olympic Park and the Droga Apartment in Surry Hills. Subsequently, Robert was the structural design engineer for the acclaimed Spry Residence, Darling Point and the Holman Residence, Dover Heights.
