Unleashing the inner scientist

28 August 2012

During National Science Week 2012, the Compass program supported the attendance of more than 770 students from eleven of our partner primary schools at Science Unleashed, the Australian Museum's annual science festival. The next generations of young scientists from Bexley, Condell Park, Fairfield, Kogarah, Panania, Revesby South, Villawood East, Wattawa Heights, Wilkins, Yagoona and Athelstane public schools attended the educational and fun-filled event.

The slogan for Science Week in 2012 was 'Ignite Your Imagination', and the museum was packed with interactive activities for students to immerse themselves in while learning more about science. The range of experiences included Astronomy in the Starlab, Paleontology through Puppetry, undersea exploration in the Deep Oceans exhibit and a taste of physics in the Energy, Forces and Motion science show. Students and teachers enjoyed the day and brought back a range of science experiences to discuss in the classroom.

All the primary school students attending Science Unleashed take part in a post-visit lesson provided by Compass volunteers at their school. During the lesson, students are given the opportunity to reflect positively on their science experience and make links to higher education. Click here to learn more about the 3-Phase program.
