Year 10 School Certificate Workshop
23 October 2009
Year 10 Marrickville High School students attended a School Certificate Preparation Workshop at the University of Sydney on October 23rd, 2009, organised through the Compass Project and staff at Marrickville. The workshop was held in the New Law Building, which was an ideal location for our students who appreciated the newly built lecture theatres.
The workshop was opened by Jonathan Saurine, from the Centre of Continuing Education, who discussed methods and strategies to prepare for the School Certificate examinations. He focused on the role of the memory, organising information, linking ideas, practising past papers and observing sample responses. He also invited Marrickville staff to share their teaching strategies with the presenters and the students.
Students were then organised into four groups to begin their focus on the individual tested subjects. The groups were led by very experienced and knowledgeable presenters. In the English and History sessions, students focused on the test paper format, demands of the questions, terminology and syllabus demands and outcomes. Students worked through sample test papers and formulated responses to questions that were insightful and detailed.
The students appreciated the efforts of the presenters, the university and staff of Marrickville. The content was relevant and explicitly taught to our students and students felt further supported in their endeavours to succeed in their pending examinations. Marrickville staff were also pleased to see that our teaching methods and approach to School Certificate preparation were supported by the efforts of the presenters. A very valuable and productive day, for both students and staff. Thank you to the presenters, the Compass Project and the University.
