Word Up Volunteer Program launched with MULTILIT PD
25 February 2010
When asked where University of Sydney students could support Compass schools in a volunteering capacity, the answer was almost without exception: Literacy. Following consultation with the schools in late 2009, the Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy (MULTILIT) program was identified as the schools preferred option. Compass Senior Project Officer and Volunteer Coordinator, Miriam Pellicano said that "Not only is MULTILIT's success on individual students completely measurable, but the tutoring aspect of the MULTILIT program provides the perfect structure for training volunteers"On Tuesday 23rd February 30 teachers from Marrickville HS, Marrickville IEC, Condell Park HS, Kogarah High School, Kogarah IEC, Marrickville West PS, Wilkins PS, Kogarah PS, Athelstane PS, Bexley PS, Condell Park PS, Yagoona PS, Wattawa Heights PS, Panania PS, Revesby Sth PS and Picnic Point PS attended a one day Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy (MULTILIT) Professional Training Workshop at the University's Camperdown Campus.
Facilitated by MULTILIT's Kyle Pitt, the workshop was also attended by three Word Up student volunteers and Social Inclusion Unit staff. MULTLIT's Reading Tutor Program is an intensive reading intervention for low-progress readers and one of the preferred literacy programs for DEEWR's National Partnerships initiative being undertaken in a number of Compass schools in 2010. Miriam tells us that "MULTILIT's appeal is that it is a reading program in which parents, volunteers and even other students are able to deliver. Getting the wider school community engaged in this program will be the key to a successful, sustainable program."
Feedback from the MULTILIT the workshop was excellent. A Kogarah Intensive English Centre teacher said "Thank you, it was fantastic and I can't wait to implement the program"
Encouraged by the success of the workshop, we are now on a stall at O-Week encouraging Sydney students to volunteer.
