Students find Compass at the University of Sydney Open Day

30 August 2012

The beautiful weather on Saturday 25 August created an inviting atmosphere for the annual University of Sydney Open Day. The university precinct was packed with students, parents and teachers from all over Sydney seeking out information about higher education: Open Days are a perfect opportunity for students to explore their options, learning more about which institutions offer the courses they are interested in, whether university, TAFE, or college. This year, Compass joined the festivities and welcomed students from our partner high schools. In conjunction with the Future Direction Network (FDN), Compass organised for more than 100 students from Fairfield, Liverpool Boys, Liverpool Girls, Moorebank and Westfields Sports High Schools to attend the Open Day through courtesy buses sponsored by the National Rugby League (NRL).

On arrival, the students, parents and teachers were welcomed by Compass volunteers and stopped in at the Refectory Room in the Quadrangle, which was transformed into the Compass hub for the day. Compass staff and volunteers chatted with students over tea and coffee, before the students set off to explore the Open Day, escorted by Compass volunteers.

While some students discovered the diverse range of study options, Year 12 students from Compass partner schools applying for scholarships also had the opportunity to seek advice from Compass staff about their draft personal statement. The one-on-one clinic was a follow-up to pilot Year 12 scholarship writing workshops held earlier in the term. The students found the personal consultation very valuable, with time to reflect on and revise their writing quite difficult to find at this time of the year.

Compass and FDN would like to thank the NRL for their generous support in providing the buses for students and parents, as well as the Compass volunteers for their friendly assistance to students on the day.
