Summer works to improve our campus

CIS project teams are working to complete a series of upgrades and improvements to our teaching and learning facilities before the start of semester in 2013.

As some University operations close for the year, a complex program of campus improvements is only just beginning.

December and January provides a short period in which numerous works can be carried out while there are fewer staff and students on campus.

It is one of the busiest periods for CIS project teams to complete a series of upgrades and improvements to our teaching and learning facilities before the start of semester in 2013.

What's happening

Here is an overview of some of the key projects taking place from December 2012 to March 2013.

Laboratory upgrades program

Chemistry Building (F11), levels 2, 4 and 5

Major refurbishment works are underway to provide a series of new and upgraded laboratories including:

• room 205 - new separations facility to be completed late January 2013
• new labs on level 4 (rooms 439 and 424) and on level 5 (rooms 524 and 521) due to be completed by late February 2013
• any power outages on these levels are being coordinated through the school laboratory manager.

Blackburn Building (D06), level 4

• work for a new PC2 lab has started on level 4
• hoardings are up around the construction zone and access to the remainder of level 4 is still possible
• any services shut downs will be coordinated in advance
• due to be completed by late February 2013.

RMC Gunn Building (B19), levels 4 and 6

Refurbishment to provide teaching labs and new office space:

• work is expected to start before the end of December 2013 and finish in late February 2013
• a small site shed will be installed in between the RMC Gunn building and the Veterinary Science Conference Centre for the duration of the works.

2013 Learning space program

15 lecture theatres across Camperdown/Darlington, Mallet Street and Cumberland campuses will receive a variety of upgrades, including new AV lecturns:

• major refurbishments are planned for lecture theatres in the Chemistry Building and the Carslaw Building including new seating and a complete upgrade of audio visual technology
• work due to start before the end of December 2012, to be completed by the end of February 2013.

Essential power upgrades

Ausgrid is upgrading the electricity supply to the University and as a result of Ausgrid's works, the University is required to undertake a schedule of mandatory power upgrades.

Works will take place at the following locations and are due to be completed by April 2013:

• Fisher Library (F04)
• John Woolley Building (A20)
• Griffith Taylor (A19) - works are scheduled to be completed by end of December 2012. This feed affects a significant proportion of the northern precinct of the Camperdown Campus
• City Road footbridge - works to relocate overhead power lines underground under the City Road bridge
• Madsen Building (F09).

Teaching spaces refurbishments

Engineering Link Building (J13), level 4

• upgrade of teaching spaces in preparation for Faculty of Civil Engineering Project Management programs
• work is expected to be completed in March 2013.

Refurbishments and fit outs

New MBA School, Castlereagh Street

• work begins before the end of December 2012 for the fit out of the University's new MBA School in Sydney's CBD
• work is due to finish by the end of February 2013.

Australian Technology Park, level 2

• work is underway to relocate more Faculty of Agriculture and Environment staff to the ATP during January 2013.

Major projects underway

Work also continues over the summer break for the University's transformational projects underway:

• Charles Perkins Centre
• Abercrombie Precinct
• Australian Institute for Nanoscience
• Sports and Aquatic Centre upgrade
