Game on for 'Team Green'
16 September 2009
Thursday 10th September 2009 saw the launch of the University of Sydney's new Sustainable Workplace initiative. Designed to promote sustainability in the workplace, this program will support staff to effect change in the day-to-day running of the University. It will do this by developing and supporting a network of staff representatives who are aware of the dynamics in their own workplace and are in a position to improve the sustainability of current practices.
The initial response to the program was very positive, with over 50 staff recruited to the Sustainable Workplace Team from several university campuses.
The induction workshop provided staff with an opportunity to meet colleagues interested in environmental issues and collectively plan a vision for the program Kim Anderson, from the University Senate opened the day's proceedings and expressed the Senate's support for the program. The day corresponded with the launch of the new Sustainable Campus website, a tool to inform all staff of ways to increase the sustainability of their working lives.
John Lavarack, Manager Campus Sustainability said "the day was a tremendous success with team members establishing their vision and expressing strong commitment to their new roles in workplace sustainability at the University"
TIPS on making your workplace more sustainable:
- Turning off printers and scanners at the end of the day and on weekends, rather than leaving them on 'standby' power, can save up to 14% of their energy usage.
- Next time you go out for a coffee, take your own mug instead of accepting a disposable one. Most waxed paper products can not be recycled and end up in landfill.
- If you have video conferencing facilities available to you try cancelling your next business flight and suggest the meeting is conducted via a video conferencing call.
