Protect yourself from phishing emails

Phishing emails are designed to fraudulently capture private and valuable information such as bank account details, user IDs and passwords.
How do I spot a phishing email?
Any email that asks you to respond with private information or asks you to visit a website that subsequently asks for private information is a phishing email.

The University would never ask you to provide your username or password via email. If you receive an email requesting personal information, check that the sender is a legitimate representative of the University. In the example below, the message refers to University's "Customer Services" and the "Online" departments - neither of which exist at the University of Sydney. Phishing emails will normally omit or provide false contact details, so check the validity of phone numbers, URLs or email addresses before you respond.
What do I do if I receive a phishing email?
Never respond to an email that has requested personal information. If you receive a phishing email in your University account, or if you have already responded to a phishing attack, reset your UniKey password immediately and contact the ICT Helpdesk on firstname.lastname@example.org or 9351 6000.
