IT services for students - a guide for staff

21 February 2011

This guide contains information about the ICT services available to our students - something helpful if you've got new students asking you for all sorts of help at the beginning of semester!

  1. Getting started
The ICT website called Switch contains information about the ICT services available for students. For an introduction to the services available, and where and how students can access them, visit sydney.edu.au/ict/students and click Getting started.

  2. Orientation seminars
For students who prefer a face-to-face approach, this week ICT has been holding two daily one-hour seminars about the ICT services available for students. Topics include using ICT Access Lab facilities such as computers and printing, how to access Sydney Mail and internet, and where to access MyUni or the University eLearning system. Sessions will be held on Thursday 24 and Friday 25 February between 10-11am and 2-3pm in Room 300, Madsen Building (Geosciences Access).

  3. Students needing IT help?
If you come across a student with an IT-related question or if you notice someone needs help setting up a laptop or accessing one of the University online systems, please direct them to one of our staffed ICT Access Labs or ask them to call the ICT Helpdesk on 9351 6000 between 8am and 9pm, Mon-Fri. You can also direct them to the student IT support site, Switch, which is located at sydney.edu.au/ict/students

  4. Computers on campus
The University has 16 ICT Access Labs across several campuses that provide free access to computers with software such as Microsoft Office 2007, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Endnote. All labs have black and white printing and some are equipped with colour printing and scanning facilities. EFTPOS and credit card payment facilities are available to enable students to add money to their UniKey account (cash payments are only accepted at the Student Centre). Lab locations, opening hours, software information, and how many computers are available in each lab are available on sydney.edu.au/ict/accesslabs

  5. Accessing the internet
All students can access the internet for free on an ICT Access Lab computer, or on their own laptops or mobile devices via the University wireless network. Internet access is provided free of charge for all standard student access for education and reasonable personal usage. Students can also browse some of the key elements of the University website by visiting Sydney Mobile on their mobile phone. Browse to m.sydney.edu.au to search the library database, view maps, find staff contact details, and read about the latest University news and events.

Students with laptops or wifi-enabled smart phones can connect to the University's wifi network. They will need to setuptheir device and install the Cisco VPN client before accessing external internet services. Setup guides, technical requirements and wireless access maps are available at sydney.edu.au/free-internet
