Charity Night 2011

15 October 2011

Charity night is the annual event where residents come together and fundraise for a specific charity. This year, the IHMA Environment and Welfare officers Lisa and Phoebe organised an auction to support Opportunity International, an organisation that gives people living in poverty a 'hand-up' through microfinance. They give people an opportunity to make a living for themselves by giving out small loans to help them start up a business.

Residents generously put up a variety of goods and services for auction, ranging from a photo-shoot with our in-house professional photographer, Tina, cooking lessons with Adam, and amazing architectural sketches by the talented Nicholas, to hampers and other gifts donated by sponsors, IHMA and SUIHAA.

Cameron and CJ did a great job hosting the auctions, with bidding prices skyrocketing in the heat of competition between the bidders. There was definitely more than once when an auction ended up with memorable bids of over $200 each!

The highlight of the night would have to be the pie eating competition. Residents placed bids on the competitors, and after two incredibly messy and entertaining rounds of the competition, the winners walked away with prizes (movie tickets, bubble tea vouchers and wafers).

Through charity night this year, we managed to raise over $3000 to go towards Opportunity International in the Philippines. This wonderful achievement would not have been possible without the hard work of the Environmental and Welfare officers, and everyone who attended!
