Candlelight Dinner 2012
15 November 2012
As per International House's custom, there was a formal dinner marking the end of the semester and the beginning of StuVac. Residents came down, after mingling and canapés, to a beautiful dining hall with flags of all the residents' countries hanging from the ceiling.
The night opened with a farewell to all residents in their last semester at IH. On a lighter note, 2012's IHMA Chairperson, Lisa Deng also introduced 2013's chairperson, Tiffanie Sugianto and crowned her with a tiara.
Following this was the candle-lighting ceremony. Representatives of different countries pledged a commitment to carrying the light of love, friendship and goodwill from one nation to another in their mother tongue. Symbolic of the pledge read, they carried lit candles to light the centrepieces of their respective tables.
There was still plenty more to come. Winning the Diane and Howard Cook Award for exemplifying what IH stands for was Renee Noble. The Rosemary Berrick photography award went to Laura Shang for her picture 'Tea Plantation' taken in Malaysia's Cameron Highlands. Check out the finalists here! SUIHAA also presented over $6000 from Charity Night and $2000 from various alumni to Bo's Children Hospital.
Toward the end of the night Katy and Luke, IH's Deputy Director and Assistant Director, thanked the SRs and the Harassment and Discrimination Officer for their work this year. IH's Director, Jessica Carroll then presented tokens of appreciation to the wonderful people who contributed to the IHMA in 2012.
It was a wonderful way to end the semester - what's not to love about friends and good food? Thank you to all the fantastic people who made it such a wonderful evening! Check out the pictures here.
