The EU Emissions Trading Scheme: What Can Australia Learn?

About the topic

This lecture will survey the main elements of the EU Emission Trading Scheme (ETS), that have been in force since 2005,that are applicable in 30 countries. After a first trial and error phase (2005-2007), the second phase (2008-2012) is now crucial for the credibility of the system. For the third phase (2013-2020), the EU ETS has been modified considerably, for example it is more harmonised and centralised. Next to industrial installations, the EU ETS will soon also beapplicable to the aviation sector. It is clear that Australia, in developing its own ETS, can learn from the EU experiences and develop a system that can be linked up to the EU ETS.
