AMRC receives ACIAR grant for a project on fisheries, dams and livelihoods in Laos

6 December 2010

AMRC has received a grant from the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR)for a study on fisheries, dams and livelihoods in Laos. $125k has been granted for a pilot study in 2011 and $1.5 million over four years for the complete study. The pilot study will review existing work on fisheries trends, impacts, the place of fisheries within livelihood systems and adaptation, mitigation responses where hydrological changes have already occurred, and how the costs of adaptation and mitigation have been distributed among various stakeholders. The substantive grant is for a project based in Laos which will investigate risks to food and income security related to impacts on fisheries in rural Laos due to existing environmental changes as compounded by the effects of dam construction on the Mekong and its tributaries.
