27 June 2012
Research by SMB staff on the value of lectures to undergraduate students was mentioned by the Financial Review in their story about the value of online lectures.
The cited paper is authored by Vanessa Gysbers, Jill Johnston, Dale Hancock and Gareth Denyer, and titled Why do Students Still Bother Coming to Lecture, When Everything is Available Online?
The authors conducted a survey of surveyed 563 undergraduate students to discover why they attended lectures despite the availability of copious online materials. 82 % of responding students reported that they always or mostly attend lectures and 74% expressed a negative emotion when asked how they would feel if lectures were abolished.
Lead author and SMB lecturer Vanessa Gysbers was interviewed for the Financial Review article. In it she argues for the academic and social benefits of live lectures
