Kavya Swaminathan wins Faculty of Science Postgraduate Research Prize
11 May 2012

SMB PhD Candidate with Associate Professor Kevin Downard, Kavya Swaminathan has been awarded a Faculty of Science Postgraduate Research Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement. The Faculty awarded only eight Prizes to recognise outstanding Postgraduate student academic achievement, particularly during the early phases of Candidature. The criteria for the Prize was the significance and quality of a manuscript which has been accepted for publication, and the role the student played in that particular research project.
Kavya has employed a mass spectrometry based approach to investigate the binding of anti-viral inhibitors to their target proteins, that is currently being applied to develop new anti-virals against influenza and identify anti-viral resistant strains. Her work was recently published in the highest ranked analytical journal, Analytical Chemistry (IF 5.874).
Kavya will be presented with a certificate and cash prize at a forthcoming Faculty of Science Awards Evening. Congratulations Kavya!
