From discovering a set of new moves aged 12 to landing his first job in contemporary dance at 17 to guiding Kylie Minogue on her world Fever tour and beyond, Rafael Bonachela can draw on a rich vein of experiences.

Which is why the new Artistic Director of the Sydney Dance Company will have little trouble conversing with the audience at the inaugural Friends of The Con - Music Collaborationsession at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music on 17 February.

The Spanish-born Bonachela is only a few weeks away from the premiere of his new major work We Unfold, which will feature a newly commissioned score for cello and piano by the eminent Italian composer Ezio Bosso.

In a recent interview he said the theme of We Unfold was close to his personal outlook of 'moving on (with dance), stretching out.'

'The Bosso symphony is classical contemporary music, very emotional strings that I love, really powerful,' the man who describes himself as a 'movement junkie,' told Time Out.

With a long list of commissions from leading dance companies around the world to his credit and now the challenge of leading the Sydney Dance Company into an exciting new era, Bonachela is seen as the perfect first-up presenter of The Con's 'Music Collaboration with Other Forms' series.

This series is an integral part of the Friends of The Con 2010 calendar of events, that embraces talks, the Dean's Gala Concert and Dinner, the My Music Series, the Cocktail Hour Recital Series, Music and Film, Conductors' Series, a Music Festival Picnic in the Mountains and the Sensational Sunday Series of concerts.

In March, renowned film director Bruce Beresford will be the second presenter in the Meet the Artistic Directors series.
