'CONCERT FOR CHRISTCHURCH'

10 March 2011

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music will host a special fundraising event this Sunday, 13 March to support the Australian Red Cross New Zealand Earthquake appeal.

The 'Concert for Christchurch' will unite some of the finest musicians from both sides of the Tasman in a jazz and classical music tribute to the people of Christchurch.

The event will be conducted by the internationally renowned Professor Imre Palló, the Conservatorium's Pro-Dean and Chair of Conducting and Opera Production.

Performers will include the celebrated New Zealand born flautist Alexa Still, former Principal Flute with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and now Professor of Flute and Director of Performance Research at The Con.

Admission to the concert will be free with donations to be collected before and after the event.

All funds raised will be donated to the Australian Red Cross New Zealand Earthquake Appeal to:

  • Provide earthquake affected communities with emergency relief and recovery assistance
  • Send specialist aid workers to assist in relief and recovery operations
  • Support the work of New Zealand Red Cross in assisting people affected by this disaster

Dean and Principal of the Conservatorium, Professor Kim Walker said the concert was overwhelmingly supported by students and staff at the Conservatorium.

"Many of our faculty and students have friends and family members in Christchurch, and others enjoy a special connection with the city through a shared love of music performance and education," Professor Walker said.

"At a time of such great devastation, it is our privilege to support the relief and recovery efforts and convey the message that our hearts are with them."

University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor, Dr Michael Spence said: "We have all been shocked by the violence of the recent Christchurch earthquake, saddened by the steadily revealed death toll and uplifted by the strength and generosity of the survivors, rescuers and volunteers."

"We are thinking of them and are considering what we can do to help the city recover and rebuild.
