Bravo! - Van Emmerik is in top brass in the USA
31 May 2010
Internationally renowned euphonium artist and PhD student at The Con, Matthew van Emmerik, will be front and centre this weekend when he plays with the US Air Force Band.
Van Emmerik is performing at the International Tuba Euphonium Association festival in Arizona, and will be a key part of the premiere of a new Euphonium Concerto by Australian composer Brendon Broadstock.
Playing in military bands is nothing new to the Victorian - he has been principal euphonium player for both the Royal Air Force in the UK and the Royal Australian Navy.
Van Emmerik, who was recently appointed a lecturer at Melbourne University, was the first euphonium player to record a commercial CD as part of his doctorate at The Con.
The CD, "Neath Austral Skies", has received glowing reviews, as has his third CD "Utak - The Sacred Grove."
Earlier this year, van Emmerik was awarded the inaugural Australasian Band Conductors scholarship with Sydney's St Mary's Band, a prize that will see him undertaking tuition and performance workshops.
