Former New South Wales Premier, the Honourable Bob Carr, has been appointed the inaugural Patron of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Foundation.

The Foundation's Chairman Andrew Fairweather, said he was "absolutely thrilled" that Mr. Carr has agreed to join the Foundation.

"Bob Carr was the obvious choice to fill this vital role. His commitment to the arts and especially the Conservatorium is unparalleled."

In 1997 as Premier of NSW, Mr Carr announced what would become one of the most significant initiatives in the Conservatorium's 95-year history - a major upgrade of the Conservatorium with the goal of creating a world-class music education facility.

That goal was achieved. The Con is one of the world's leading music conservatoria, whose touring orchestras and ensembles have won it a growing reputation on the international stage.

Commenting on his decision to accept the invitation to become the Foundation's inaugural Patron, Bob Carr stated:

"Rebuilding the Conservatorium is one of my proudest achievements.

"We were able to do it in a way that enhanced, not degraded, the environment of the Botanic Gardens. We enhanced the heritage of the building.

"I had inspected the Con in the early 90s. Its condition was wretched. I did not want to see student musicians in conditions like this. Hence the commitment to rebuilding, even during the period of the Olympics.

"It is now a great honour to be associated with support for the Conservatorium as it moves towards its centenary in 2015."

The Dean and Principal of The Con, Professor Kim Walker, said the Foundation was an integral part of the collective aspiration to maintain and build on the institution's contribution to music performance, composition and scholarship.

"Bob Carr has an almost spiritual connection with the Conservatorium. His government was instrumental to ensuring the much loved Con was sustained for an ever growing future."

For many years, the SCM Foundation has encouraged a community of passionate and enthusiastic benefactors to fund scholarships, tours, concert programs and many other musical activities at The Con. Over the next five years, leading to The Con's Centenary in 2015, the Foundation aims to build The Con's endowment to ensure that it remains a global centre of excellence in music for future generations.
