In the media - Vienna here I come for Angela

21 October 2010

Alumni Angela Brun is packing her bags for Austria after winning the Opera Foundation Australia's Vienna State Opera Award for 2011.

The win provides Brun, 26, with four months of rehearsals, coaching and understudying, learning between five and six roles.

"It's amazing; I feel so grateful to be given the opportunity to learn and observe in a city which has such a rich culture of opera," Brun told the Wentworth Courier.

Brun completed a Diploma of Opera at The Con last year. She currently works for Opera Australia, touring primary schools and performing abridged versions of operas.

"I played Cinderella, singing three shows a day, which was quite challenging," she said.

"For many of the children, it was their first experience watching a live opera. Many of them didn't even have the vocabulary to describe what they saw, so they'd say 'That was such a good movie'."

Brun, who grew up in Alice Springs where her father was a pilot with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, has been understudying Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance and Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
