Sydney welcomes peace team from middle east
22 August 2008
The Chancellor of the University of Sydney hosted a VIP breakfast this morning for an AFL football team made up of Israelis and Palestinians.
Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO joined with the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Michael Spence, and dozens of other dignitaries in welcoming the team, called the Peace Team, to the University of Sydney .
The team is one of 18 teams competing in the AFL's International Cup, taking place in Melbourne from 27 August-7 September.
It is being coached and mentored by five-time premiership player and Brownlow Medalist, Robert Dipper DiPierdomenico, who recently travelled to Israel to run clinics for team members.
"Their journey has been amazing, some of these guys have got to travel four hours through three check points just to get to one hour's training," he said.
The breakfast ended with a traditional team run-through of a crepe banner, followed by a skills demonstration and game of kick-to-kick on the University's Oval Number 1.
The Peace Team is a joint project of the Peres Center for Peace and the Al-Quds Association for Democracy and Dialogue, and the University of Sydney is a major sponsor. The Australian Chapter of the Peres Center is leading the project in a bid to demonstrate to everyday Australians that Palestinians and Israelis can work together to achieve common goals.
