Dr Grace Sharkey

Dr Grace Sharkey is a Lecturer in the Department of Gender and Cultural Studies at the University of Sydney. Completing her PhD in the Department in 2018, her research reaches across the areas of youth, feminism, and queer theory.

In studies of youth, Grace has a particular interest in sexual knowledges and what children are allowed to know. She is a member of the Feminist Boys Studies project led by Professor Catherine Driscoll. With this group, she considers ideas of bad boys and good boys, including focusing on the ‘incel’ as a figure of feminist spectacle. She has published writing on feminism and masculinity in journals like Continuum and Boyhood Studies.

Grace also runs the internship program for the Master of Cultural Studies.

Grace’s ongoing research investments are situated in studies of youth, feminism, and queer theory.

She has been motivated by scholarly objects that attract feminist controversy, such as pornography, the figure of the incel, and more recently, Germaine Greer.

Grace has an interest in the (sometimes reductive) meanings we ascribe to terms like ‘objectification’ and the ‘male gaze’, informed by the writing of Robyn Wiegman.

With a keen investment in teaching and learning, Grace also researches pedagogy and is currently working on a project about care in the classroom.

Core collaborators in the Feminist Boys Studies research group come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds spanning education, psychology and philosophy. With this team she hopes to continue researching boys and feminism, particularly in school settings. Grace also hosts the team’s podcast, Boy Trouble.

As the Internship Officer for the Master of Cultural Studies, Grace builds and maintains relationships with external partners like City of Sydney, ActionAid, State Library of NSW and ACON.

Grace is a passionate and highly regarded teacher. She most frequently teaches units in Gender and Cultural Studies that focus on gender, youth, intimacy, and sexuality studies.

Grace supervises research at Honours, Masters, and PhD level (as an auxiliary). She is particularly interested in supervising projects that focus on one or more of the following areas: feminist theory; queer theory; affect; love and intimacy; popular culture, especially cinema and television studies; women’s writing, especially with a focus on autotheory.

Grace is a member of the Cultural Studies Association of Australasia and the Australian Women and Gender Studies Association.
