Thesis title: Sundanese ideational grammar: perspectives from discourse semantics and register
Supervisors: James Martin, Yaegan Doran
Thesis abstract:
This project aims at developing an ideational grammar of Sundanese through the lens of Systemic Functional Linguistics. In particular, it will explore Sundanese ideational grammar from the perspective of how it realises text patterns in terms of higher levels of meaning called discourse semantics and the register variable field. Such relations are crucial as the ‘grammar’ that will be developed in this project can contribute to the exploration of broader patterns of discourse. This project expands results of previous studies on Sundanese descriptions, focusing on the initial exploration of the experiential grammar of Sundanese, particularly the system of TRANSITIVITY and nominal group, and its linkage to the broader patterns of text. This project will extend the existing system of TRANSITIVITY in Sundanese by including a delicate description of relational and mental clauses as well as developing the system of clause complexes in Sundanese. This project will contribute to the area of language description in Systemic Functional Linguistics as well as laying the foundation of the development of Sundanese educational linguistic programs across West Java.
