Applied Linguistics

The Applied Linguistics program trains you to use your knowledge of language and apply it in diverse contexts, including media, discourse analysis, and language teaching. At the end of this program students will look at the world around them with new eyes. They will learn to analyse texts that they encounter in their everyday and professional life and will be able to apply this knowledge for a range of purposes. The Applied Linguistics degree is designed for people who are interested in applying linguistics in other professional areas, including education, translation, journalism and media, language policy and planning, and social development. The degree is also suitable for people involved in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), second language teaching (SLT), and the teaching of modern languages. We teach both traditional face-to-face and computer-assisted methodologies. The units offered in this degree are informed by current research in systemic functional linguistics and the groundbreaking literacy initiatives of the ‘Sydney School’ in primary, secondary, tertiary and adult education. Our new areas of strength include World Englishes, the politics of English language teaching, media discourse, critical discourse analysis, and corpus linguistics. Some of the units of study in the degree include: Functional Grammar, Educational Linguistics, Language Society and Power, World Englishes, and Media Discourse.

Please note that there is no mid-year intake for this program.
