University of Sydney engineer Professor Xiaoke Yi has been awarded one of NSW’s top engineering honours.
Professor Yi from the School of Electrical and Information Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies, took home the most prestigious award of the night – the NSW Government-sponsored Bradfield Award – at Engineers Australia's 2017 NSW Showcase dinner.
The award is named after John Bradfield, the celebrated engineer and University of Sydney alumnus behind two of Sydney’s most transformative projects: the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the city’s underground railway system.
NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer, Professor Mary O'Kane, presented the award to Professor Yi in recognition of her accomplishment of exceptional engineering merit, which makes a major contribution to the community.
Professor Yi was recognised for her research into nanophotonics and microwave photonics and her research outcome for real-world applications, including a new pain-free, low-cost method to help people with diabetes monitor their ketone levels.
University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr Michael Spence congratulated Professor Yi on her achievement.
“This success reflects the high calibre of Professor Yi’s work and her commitment to solving real-world problems,” he said.
Professor Yi said she was honoured to win the prestigious award and represent the University of Sydney.
“I would like to thank my colleagues in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies for their support and the University of Sydney community for encouraging my multidisciplinary research, across my faculty, the Australian Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology (AINST) and the Charles Perkins Centre,” she said.
Professor Yi is the ‘Computing, Communication and Security’ theme leader in AINST and part of the first cohort of fellows of the University’s Sydney Research Accelerator (SOAR) program.
She was also named as one of Australia’s most innovative engineers in Engineers Australia’s Most Innovative Engineers 2017 awards earlier this year.
Professor Yi will join a panel of experts for a special Sydney Ideas event on entrepreneurship this Wednesday 11 October. Click here to find out more and register.
