Marine Biology

Study in the discipline of Marine Biology is offered as an interdisciplinary major. Units of study in this major are available at standard and advanced level.

Programme structure and content

The University of Sydney Institute of Marine Science (USIMS) provides for undergraduate units of study of a transdisciplinary nature in the marine sciences at the Intermediate, Senior and Honours levels. Staff from the School of Biological Sciences and the School of Geosciences teach these units.

First year planning Marine Biology major

Recommended: To complete a Marine Biology major the minimum requirement is 24 credit points of BIOL units listed under Table 1 for Marine Science. To prepare for this, it is recommended that a student complete 12 credit points of Junior BIOL and 12 credit points of Junior Geosciences.

Requirements for a major

For a major in Marine Biology, the minimum requirement is 24 credit points from senior units listed in this subject area. 12 credit points of intermediate BIOL units are highly recommended, including BIOL2024/2924, BIOL2023/2923, BIOL2021/2921 and BIOL2022/2922.

Honours

Students undertaking Honours do so in specific projects in Biological Science or Geoscience.
