The health care sector in Australia and internationally continues to inspire and challenge us and Sydney Nursing School at the University of Sydney plays an important role in contributing to advancements in health and wellbeing, through nursing and midwifery, at all levels from individual care to issues of global health.

Sydney Nursing School’s vision is to create and sustain a vibrant environment of engaged enquiry of the highest quality and impact; one which emphasises the indivisibility of nursing and midwifery research, education, practice and policy.

With expertise in teaching, research and policy development our academic and clinical leaders are regarded as trusted mentors for future generations of practitioners and leaders in health care. Our redesigned programs at both pre- and post-registration levels reflect the changing health care landscape and provide our students the requisite knowledge, skills and experience to prepare them for rewarding careers in clinical practice and nursing and midwifery research.

Studying nursing at the University of Sydney provides students access to teaching and research across all the health professions in an academically rigorous yet stimulating and supportive environment. Learning from world experts and studying alongside students from other health professions gives our nursing students unique educational perspectives and inter-disciplinary practice experiences, appropriately preparing them for the complexities, challenges and rewards of health care.

Within a research intensive university, Sydney Nursing School values the development of a strong research community among staff and students and encourages cross-disciplinary and collaborative research. We enjoy an increasing international reputation in research with success in competitive peer-reviewed research funding, including nationally competitive grant funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council and Australian Research Council. In the recently announced Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) rankings we received the highest possible score indicating that our research is “well above world class”.

The values held by Sydney Nursing School ensure research, education, policy and practice development endeavours are carried out in a culture of transparency, respect, inclusiveness, collegiality and cultural safety. This is a culture which relishes constructive, critical debate and intellectual challenge. It rewards innovation and creativity for students, staff and our clinical and professional partners. Our practice and policy development and engagement with all health professions enables us to provide advice and consultancy across many key areas of nursing and midwifery.

Sydney Nursing School is proud to be educating nurses and midwives for communities near and far and to be undertaking research to influence future trends in treatment, patient care and disease prevention. Whether you are joining us to advance your nursing career, or just beginning your fascinating journey to become a nurse you will find Sydney Nursing School a great place to be part of and I welcome you.
