Dr Shiva Chandra

Dr Shiva Chandra is a post-doctoral research fellow at the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies at the University of Sydney. His research interests include personal life, sexuality, gender, race, digital media, youth, and wellbeing. More specifically, Shiva’s work examines queer attachment, and belonging, including both offline and online experiences. Shiva specialises in the use of creative and innovative methods to investigate subjectivity and how individuals relate to their social worlds. His scholarship is underpinned by the belief that research carries social responsibility and should sit at the intersection of academia and community development, with the aim of improving people’s wellbeing.

Shiva completed his PhD at the University of Sydney, which examined the relationships and identities of gay men of South Asian descent. Since then, he has researched and managed several international multi-stakeholder projects involving universities, industry, government, non-governmental and community organisations, including Facebook, UNICEF, LEGO, the Australian eSafety Commissioner and ACON. These projects have resulted in public facing reports, outlining policy recommendations and solutions, with a focus on person-centred design.

He has also acted as an advisor to organisations such as Rainbow Families, YCollab, and ACON, on resource development, research, and community engagement.

Shiva’s current research projects involve examining gay men’s perceptions and experiencers of antimicrobial resistant STIs, with a focus on community engagement to create viable and meaningful ground-up solutions.
