Welcome to the Academic Board
From the Chair, Academic Board
Role of the Academic Board
The Academic Board has the principal responsibility to encourage and maintain the highest standards in teaching, scholarship and research and to safeguard the academic freedom of the University. The Academic Board is also responsible for overseeing the development of all academic activities of the University, formulating and reviewing policies, guidelines and procedures in relation to academic matters and playing an active role in assuring the quality of teaching, scholarship and research in the University. To be confident that the policy structures properly sustain academic quality assurance and are appropriate to the University's needs, the Board monitors their implementation and effectiveness. Much of this monitoring is effected through Academic Board reviews. The review process is formative and collegial. The aim is to provide constructive feedback on the quality of a Faculty's educational provision.
The Academic Board reports to Senate and provides academic advice to both Senate and the Vice-Chancellor on all academic matters, including academic priorities and policies of the University, academic aspects of the University’s strategic plan, policies concerning the conditions of appointment and employment of academic staff, the maintenance of academic standards and any academic matters it considers to be of strategic importance. Specifically, the Academic Board has delegated authority to approve new courses and approve changes to existing courses; determine policy regarding programs of study and assessment; determine requirements to be satisfied by candidates for awards of degrees, diplomas and certificates; and to determine the terms and conditions of awards, scholarships and prizes.
The full responsibilities of the Academic Board are listed under “Terms of Reference” on this website.
The work of the Academic Board is based on a model of distributed participation. That is, the Academic Board recognises that much of its work occurs outside the formal Academic Board meetings.
Work is carried out by the Chair and Deputy Chair, Chairs of Committees, Committees of the Academic Board and Working Parties. Interested members of the University community are actively encouraged to participate in these various activities, which can be found on the “Activities of the Academic Board” page.
