In Leigh’s most recent past, he served as a PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Simon Ringer and Dr. Michael Moody upon a project that considered the cluster analysis of data obtained from atom-probe techniques. Part of Leigh’s work developed a parameter tuning process for such analyses through simulations and information theoretic concepts. Characterisation of a Al-Ag-Cu alloy was performed using such tuned atom-probe techniques, which complemented micrographs obtained using transmission electron microscopy.

Research project
Leigh is working with Prof. Simon Ringer in collaboration with researchers at the ARC Photovoltaics Centre of Excellence (APV CoE) at the University of New South Wales in a project that aims to cheaply and efficiently capture energy from sunlight. The research will advance understanding of the structure-activity relationships in silicon-based photovoltaics (PVs) by linking their properties and performance with targeted observations of their nanostructure with an end to precisely design nanostructured PVs with tailored properties. This work requires the use of atom-probe and electron tomography as well as state-of-the-art specimen preparation with focussed-ion beam techniques.
