Bio

John Shields is Deputy Dean and Head of School at The University of Sydney Business School, where he oversees the work of the School’s Associate Deans in education, research and academic staffing, and the Directors of Educational Innovation and Work-Integrated Learning. He is a member of the Business School’s Dean’s Executive Committee and Chair of the School’s Faculty Board. John holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in History (1977) from the Australian National University, a PhD in Economic History from the University of Sydney (1990) and is Professor of Human Resource Management and Organisational Studies in the Discipline of Work and Organisational Studies within the Business School. He is an experienced educator in the human resource management field, with particular expertise in performance management and reward management. He represents the Business School on a number of University Executive Committees and Control Boards, including the Heads of School Committee, and the Sydney Operating Model Project Control Board. John also represents the School on the Australian Business Deans’ Council Learning and Teaching Network, is an Executive Board of the CEMS Global Alliance in Management Education and Chairs of the CEMS Academic Committee. His association memberships include the Australian Human Resources Institute (CAHRI), The Academy of Management, and the Australian Society for the Study of Labour History. He is also a member of Council of Sancta Sophia College at the University of Sydney.

Research Interests

John’s principal areas of research include performance management, reward management, executive remuneration and corporate governance, leadership, and business and labour history. In the field of human resource management, his publications include Managing Employee Performance and Reward, Cambridge University Press, 2e, 2016 (3e forthcoming 2018, co-authored with Michelle Brown, Sarah Kaine and James Rooney) and Human Resource Management: Strategy and Practice, 9e 2016 (10e forthcoming 2018; co-authored with Alan Nankervis, Marian Baird and Jane Coffey). He is currently engaged in national and international collaborative research projects on the psychology of pay secrecy / disclosure, predictors of employee pay preferences, predictors of organisational citizenship behavior, emotional intelligence and wellbeing at work, the impact of the director human and social capital on firm financial performance, embedding cultural intelligence in higher education contexts, the future of work and employee rewards, and mediators of the relationship between performance pay and employee motivation. He has published in a range of tier 4 and 3 journals, including Journal of Management Studies, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Management Communication Quarterly, Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resource Management, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Labour History, and Journal of Industrial Relations. His research projects involve both quantitative and qualitative methods and, more recently, survey-based experimental design.
