Thesis title: Comparing grey, green, and mixed infrastructure approaches in coastal adaptation projects to reduce disaster risk in the Asia-Pacific region

Thesis abstract:

«p»More than 40% of the global population lives along coastlines – communities which are seeing increased exposure to coastal flooding under climate change. There is a growing need for climate change adaptation measures that effectively reduce disaster risk for coastal communities. This research seeks to compare grey, green and mixed infrastructure projects to shed light on the conditions that benefit or inhibit disaster risk reduction outcomes. In order do this, this research aims to examine coastal infrastructure project implementation processes, including their inception, organisation, and design methodologies, to understand current challenges and best practices. Vulnerable populations are disproportionately affected by flooding and often simultaneously the furthest from decision-making processes that govern flood risk. A special focus will be given to stakeholder involvement in different project phases and how this participation influences the disaster risk reduction outcomes. The expected results hold potential to inform growing investments in coastal infrastructure to protect assets and people under escalating climate change impacts.«/p»
