Professor James Elliott

PT, PhD, FAPTA
Academic Director The Kolling Institute and Academic Director Allied Health and Public Health

Jim completed his PhD at the University of Queensland, Australia (UQ) in 2007 and a post-doctoral fellowship (2010) at UQ’s CCRE-Spine. The primary focus of his interdisciplinary laboratory is to quantify altered spinal cord anatomy and whole-body skeletal muscle degeneration as potential markers of recovery following spinal trauma. He has been successful as an independent investigator as in evidence of being a CI/PI/Collaborator/Consultant on over $30 million in research funding, more than 175 peer-reviewed publications, and numerous speaking invitations at interdisciplinary conferences on a national and international level. Accordingly, his work has resulted in external recognition as a global expert in neck pain (broadly) and whiplash injuries (more specifically).

Prof. Elliott is the Director the Kolling Institute and Academic Director Allied Health and Public Health, The University of Sydney. Prior to joining the University of Sydney in 2017, Elliott was a tenure-track Associate Professorin the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, USA, where he remains an adjunct Professor. Prof. Elliott is recognised as the number 2 global expert in neck muscles and the number 2 global expert in Whiplash injuries (expertscape).

My research is focused on understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the transition from acute to chronic pain following injury/trauma. Specifically, we use structural and advanced magnetic resonance imaging applications to quantify the temporal development of altered spinal cord physiology and muscle degeneration as potential cellular and molecular substrates of persistent pain-related disability. Broad applications of my work includes preventing, diagnosing, and treating pain and its sequelae following an injury/trauma. This research is based on my clinical and research experience and has expanded through interdisciplinary efforts involving the fields of magnetic resonance physics, radiology, biomedical engineering, speech language pathology, neurophysiology and physiotherapy.

CONTRIBUTION TO FIELD OF RESEARCH:

Elliott has a National and International reputation evidenced by numerous invited speaking engagements at large interdisciplinary conferences and awards for teaching and research. Prof. Elliott established the MuscleMap program; a growing global consortium of interdisciplinary clinicians using whole-body MRI and deep learning to automate the creation of the first normative reference dataset of whole-body muscle composition in healthy females and males spanning the ages from 10 to 100 years. These normative reference values covering 226 skeletal muscles can be used to diagnose pathology, accurately track the natural history of disabling neurological and musculoskeletal disorders and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment as a clinical trial endpoint.

Jim played professional baseball for the San Diego Padres (1990-1992), worked in major league baseball operations for the Colorado Rockies (1993-1996) and was inducted into the University of Denver Athletic Hall of Fame (2014).
