Biographical details

Dr. Min Hu is a Senior Research Fellow and Senior Lecture at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research, Westmead Clinical School, the University of Sydney. She leads an independent group within the Centre for Transplant & Renal Research (CTRR) focusing on cell therapy in transplantation and is a supervisorof postgraduate research students of University of Sydney. She has longstanding research interests and extensive expertisein transplant immunology and renal disease.

Dr Hu completed her MMed and PhD from the University of Sydney under the supervision of Prof Stephen Alexander at the Centre for Kidney Research, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. In 2011 she was awarded NHMRC Early Career Fellowship. During her research career, she has invetigated on the role of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in transplantation and kidney disease; development of the novel strategies to promote islet transplant tolerance for treatment of diabetes; the mechanisms of transplant tolerance and rejection in transplant patients; and identification of genetic mutations in renal patients.

She is a member of the Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) Scientific Program and Education Committee and subcommittee member of Australia Society of Immunology (ASI/ NSW ACT).

Research interests

Min’s main research interest is the development of therapeutic strategies to improve the clinical outcomes of islet and kidney transplantation to achieve complete immunological tolerance to allografts. These include investigating the immune and genetics profile of islet and kidney transplant patients, generating allospecific Tregs, developing novel regimens for tolerance induction in humanised mouse models of islet transplantation, and developing clinical grade Tregs for clinical trials.

Teaching and supervision

Dr Hu supervises PhD, Masters, Honours and summer students who are interested in transplantation studies.
