Dr Rebekah Laidsaar-Powell

I am a Cancer Institute NSW Early Career Research Fellow within the School of Psychology. I am dedicated to developing and conducting clinically relevant and impactful research which improves the clinical care and psychosocial wellbeing of individuals living with chronic physical and/or mental health conditions, and their family carers. I have over 10 years’ experience in conducting both qualitative and quantitative research in the healthcare setting. Since 2012, I have published 39 articles in international scientific journals and have been a Chief Investigator on grants totalling over $2.4 million in research funding.

I am internationally recognised for my research work in the involvement of carers in the medical system and developed the first published clinical strategies for health professionals to manage and enhance communication with carers in oncology. I have lived experience as a family carer, and a deep understanding of the challenges and rewards of supporting a loved one with a chronic illness.

I am also an experienced and dedicated educator within the School of Psychology, as a Unit of Study Coordinator and Lecturer across the areas of health psychology and mental health conditions. In addition, I am fortunate to educate and mentor the next generation of researchers as an Honours, Masters, and PhD student supervisor.

I have extensive experience in conducting and publishing high quality research in applied health psychology, including systematic reviews, qualitative studies among people living with chronic conditions, carers, and health professionals, cross-sectional and longitudinal quantitative surveys, intervention studies, and randomised controlled trials. I have developed and published highly cited and clinically relevant resources (e.g., clinical practice guidelines, health professional training) and a world-first conceptual framework of doctor-patient-family decision-making. I have significant expertise in family carer research, psycho-oncology, health professional education, design and evaluation of online education modules, and qualitative health research.

Key metrics which evidence my productivity and the high quality and relevance of my research include: 39 publications in peer reviewed journals, 12 as first author; First authored publications in leading specialist health psychology and psycho-oncology journals: Journal of Cancer Survivorship (IF= 4.442), Psycho-Oncology (IF= 3.894), Supportive Care in Cancer (IF= 3.603), and Patient Education and Counselling (IF = 2.940). I have a H-index of 16, with 9 first authored papers cited 20+ times, and high total citation count (1211). My SciVal Field-Weighted Citation Impact of 2.29 indicates my publications are cited 129% more than the global average for similar publications.

I am an experienced and dedicated teaching academic, working within the School of Psychology as a Unit of Study Coordinator and Lecturer. I was Unit Coordinator of PSYC3018 (Mental Health Conditions) in 2021 and 2022. I also lecture in PSYC3020 across a variety of health psychology topic areas, including health prevention, qualitative health research, and coping and adjustment to illness.

As an Applied Psychology educator, I am passionate about grounding my teaching in experiential, interactive and real-world learning for students.
