Sydney Centre in Geomechanics and Mining Materials

The Sydney Centre in Geomechanics and Mining Materials (SciGEM) was established in 2013 to capitalise on the outstanding pool of research strengths, specialised skills and expertise of the faculty's strong contingent of academic staff working in this field. SciGEM incorporates the former Centre for Geotechnical Research.

The overall objective of SciGEM is to both strengthen and broaden the University of Sydney's already world-leading position in geotechnical engineering and granular mechanics, and to establish a stronger focus on mining geomechanics.

SciGEM incorporates the following four specialised laboratories:

The first two of these already have international reputations for excellence. Their integration under the SciGEM banner will further facilitate collaborations and relationships with industry and government. The third is a new laboratory that has been set up to further capitalise on the expertise of SciGEM members in the study of geo-environmental issues, such as contaminant migration in soil and geo-sequestration of carbon dioxide. The fourth is a facility for high speed X-ray radiography and tomography of flowing granular media.

The approach of SciGEM members is founded on the principle 'from science to practice', as they aim to continue expanding the boundaries of knowledge in each of these interrelated fields and exploit this knowledge to revolutionise engineering solutions and lead to commercialisations.

SciGEM is currently home to nine permanent academic teaching and research staff and two postdoctoral members. It plans to recruit more academic staff as part of its aim to further develop the field of geomechanics and mining materials at the University of Sydney.

It also plans to establish a new lecture series by eminent internationally renowned scholars and leading practitioners, which will showcase cutting-edge research in the fields of geomechanics and mining materials research.
